THE NEW FALL 2021 SERIES:

4400 (Instagram: @thecw4400 / Twitter: @thecw4400 / #CW4400)

Over the last century at least, four thousand four hundred people who were overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized vanished without a trace off the face of the planet. Last night, inexplicably, they were all returned in an instant to Detroit, MI, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them. As the government races to understand the phenomenon, analyze the potential threat, and contain the story, an empathetic social worker (Joseph David-Jones, "Arrow") and hardened community corrections officer (Ireon Roach, "Candyman") are among the civil servants called upon to deal with the uncanny refugees. The new partners clash in ideology and approach, but gradually find they have more in common than they thought as they become familiar with those under their care, including: a lawyer and resilient young mother from the early aughts (Brittany Adebumola, "Grand Army"), whose unexpected reunion with her estranged husband (Cory Jeacoma, "Jersey Boys") and suddenly teenaged daughter is immediately rocky; a WWI Army surgeon fresh from the Harlem Renaissance (TL Thompson, Broadway's "Straight White Men"); an influential hidden figure from the Mississippi civil rights movement (Jaye Ladymore, "Empire"); a black sheep reverend-scion born to a notable televangelist family in 1990s Chicago (Derrick A. King, "Call Your Mother"); a seemingly shallow but misunderstood D-list reality TV star (newcomer Khailah Johnson) from Miami, circa 2015; and two wildly different unaccompanied teens, a vibrant girl (newcomer Autumn Best) whose bell bottoms give away her 1970s upbringing, and an introspective, prescient boy (Amarr Wooten, "Liv and Maddie") whose origin remains a mystery. These unwilling time travelers, collectively the 4400, must grapple with their impossible new reality, the fact that they've been returned with a few... upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were brought back now for a reason they're only beginning to understand. Based on the original TV series created by Scott Peters and Renee Echevarria, 4400 is from CBS Studios and is executive produced by Ariana Jackson, who wrote the pilot, Sunil Nayar, and Anna Fricke and Laura Terry of Pursued By a Bear.

LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE (Instagram: @TheCW / Twitter: @TheCW)

This supersized, adult version of LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE is taken out of the studio into a "jungle" and scaled up with tougher challenges and much bigger prizes on the line. It preserves the original Nickelodeon series' favorite elements including: "Olmec" (the giant talking Mayan head), the"Moat Crossings," "The Steps of Knowledge," the "Temple Run," and of course, the iconic team names: "Purple Parrots," "Blue Barracudas," "Orange Iguanas," "Red Jaguars," "Silver Snakes" and "Green Monkeys." Every episode is a hero's journey through a mysterious jungle. Five teams begin the journey, but only one is "strong enough and smart enough" to enter the ominous Olmec's Temple, avoid the "dreaded" Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure, and return it to its rightful owner. Based on the original game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon. The series is executive produced by Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox ("Paradise Run").

KILLER CAMP (Instagram: @TheCW / Twitter: @TheCW)

The new U.S. version of KILLER CAMP will return to "Camp Pleasant" as a mix of 13 unlucky American and British campers navigate through new deadly twists and surprises while competing to expose the "killer" among them for a share of the $50,000 cash prize. Each night, one of them will be viciously dispatched by camp handyman Bruce, who's back with counselor Bobby (comedian Bobby Mair), and a whole host of surprises and hilariously elaborate new murders. Executive produced by Karen Smith and Steph Harris with Ben Wilson as Showrunner, KILLER CAMP is produced by Tuesday's Child Television and distributed by Keshet International.

The first season finale gives us answers ... and many more questions.

Guest Cast: John Noble, Sebastian Roché

Well that's one way to guarantee yourself another season ... or piss off the fans when the network decides to not renew the show. Of course when the season finale of Debris was being filmed, there was no clue as to how the series would fare in the ratings. It's not unexpected that the season would leave off on a major cliffhanger or two, but the show remains on 'the bubble' -- along with a few other NBC series like Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Good Girls and Manifest -- that have not received any renewal or cancellation news thus far even though the network's Fall 2021 schedule has already been announced. But the episode did give us a few answers and left us with more questions.

Let's get the minor storyline this week out of the way, shall we, and we'll pat ourselves on the back for assuming Maddox was going to use the debris to help his son in some way. And it came probably in the nick of time. The scenes with Maddox at home were also a little perplexing because the last time he was at home, there was a packet of divorce papers on the table and his wife and Dario were gone. And that was after several time loops that had finally reunited Bryan and Finola. So now we're kind of left wondering exactly which of the universes we saw during those jumps this episode is taking place in (and that also comes into play in the last scene). We knew from the previous episode that Maddox was about to meet with his Russian contact Irina. They did meet, and there were two cases, one that we saw with a piece of debris. Maddox told Irina that she was not leaving with that case, but there was another door open to her. She must have accepted the cryptic offer because he went home and Julia, who had been trying to communicate with Dario through flash cards, had gone to take a nap, looking over a table full of medication. When Maddox arrived, it seemed she wasn't going to wake up, but she did and she was happy to see him, saying she almost made a terrible mistake. But he took her to Dario where he also had the debris set up and activated, and Dario said "Mom" to her. Now we don't know if the debris is just a short-term solution, but for the moment it has made Julia very happy, and Maddox seems to believe this is how to save the marriage.

The rest of the episode centered around the debris that George had located. While waiting for Bryan and Finola to pick him up from the antenna station, he saw what looked like a humanoid figure made of particle, possibly more pieces of debris, walking toward the station. He told Bryan they needed to leave now, but would not specify the urgency. He directed them to a quarry nearby, one that we saw at the top of the show where people had begun to gather. Seeing all the cars when they arrived, they also found the people, standing and staring, occasionally exhibiting an outburst of emotion, from tears to laughter to anger and surprise. (Incidentally, does anyone else think this quarry looks like the same mountainous area from Bryan's Afghanistan flashbacks?) They find the piece of debris and conclude that it's somehow drawing energy from the emotions of the people who were drawn here. And all of the people there from within a 25 mile radius all have newborns, so their emotions are already running high which made them perfect targets.

Bryan assumes they need to shut down the debris to help the people and goes off to get the MUs, but George tells Finola that shutting it down won't work. They can't move the debris in its current condition because being tethered to the people has given it the weight of a large building ... and disconnecting them will completely erase their memories. But that is the only option they have because Influx is coming and they need to move the debris. Finola is confused as to how George knows Influx is on the way but the answer is quite simple -- he called them. George has been working with Influx the whole time! Talk about a betrayal. And we know Influx is coming after we are taken to a gas station where Ash and Loeb are waiting for someone. I assumed it was going to be Brill (Sebastian Roché), but it was a huge surprise when we saw who the man was that exited the gas station -- John Noble, aka Walter from Fringe (a show created by Debris' creator J.H. Wyman). But he's not Walter (although that would have been a delicious twist to learn this was a continuation of Fringe ... and how many times have I compared this show to Fringe, and I didn't even know the Wyman connection?), he's Otto, and he seems to be one of if not the Influx big bad.

They arrive at the quarry and manage to sneak up on Finola, disarming her. George tells them they have to break the connection now so they can move the debris, and Finola asks what happens to Bryan? George just says he'll be making a noble sacrifice because this debris isn't a map-making piece of tech, it actually enhances the human consciousness, and they cannot let Maddox and the US government take it to weaponize it, or any other nation for that matter. They are going to use it to change the world, and from the sound of it, George seems to believe it can be used to create some kind of harmonious utopia. George takes Finola's phone and calls Bryan to tell him the MUs won't work but to stand by as he formulates a new plan.

© NBC

Otto sets up a metallic cylindrical device (and dons a pair of goggles with red and blue lenses, a nod to the red and blue glasses Walter wore on Fringe, which was a nod to Dr. Jacoby's red and blue glasses on Twin Peaks) and they all ingest something that George tells Finola will keep her memories intact. She refuses at first, but George has Ash force it down her throat, and the cylinder is activated, sending a blast of blue light toward the gathered crowd, knocking them all to ground including Bryan. The debris is now light enough to move, but they're all surprised when Bryan shambles to their location, physically damaged (his right side seems impaired) but his memories are still there. They are all baffled by this but Otto isn't. He approaches Bryan and says he knows him, calling him 'the third man'. He holds his hand over Bryan's head, seemingly to read his thoughts, and says it was nice meeting him. George has tried to convince Finola that he knows things she needs to know about the debris, and that she belongs with her father, but after everything she's just been through she says he is not her father and opts to stay with Bryan. As they head down the highway, George and Loeb see the 'particle man' walking along the side of the road. They both look scared. Otto looks smug (I don't know if Ash saw him). As the car drove past, the creature stopped and turned around, walking in the same direction which the car was traveling.

She asks Bryan if he's okay and how he survived the blast and he finally reveals the truth about those injections he's been taking. Early in the arrival of the debris, he, Garcia, and Agent Ming (whom we've not met yet) were hit by debris. The injections he's been taking were prescribed by Maddox to keep ... something from happening. It looks like something just did. Perhaps is was the injections that kept Bryan from losing his memories. But where do they go from here? Finola can no longer trust George, Finola hasn't been in contact with MI6 since she got the Ligari files for George, and now it seems that their distrust for Maddox may have been slightly misplaced because while he's working with Orbital to weaponize the debris, he's also probably known more about George's involvement with Influx than he let either of them know. Is there a possibility that Maddox is an ally?

Then we get to the final scene. No one has seen or heard anything about the mysterious ball of light that flew out of the Orbital facility. The final scene revisits that head-scratching moment with the Indigenous man sitting in the desert. And here comes the ball of light, stopping at the man who identifies himself as Dakheya (identified as Black Water Grandfather the first time we saw him). He says the orb has been on a long journey and he walks to a cave with the orb following. Inside the cave is Brill. Dakheya says, "It's time", and Brill says, "Let's begin". The camera pans to ... Finola, contained within some sort of force field which looked like the different portals that were opening up in Shelby's house after all of the time jumps. So, is this a clone of Finola (she mentioned in a previous episode that if the debris downloaded all of Bryan's memories when it cloned him, then it has hers as well), or a Finola from another universe?

That question will only be answered if NBC (or some other entity) renews the series for a second season. Debris took a little time finding its footing, with the first three or four episodes acting as just another 'debris of the week' episode, but of course each episode was designed to show us what the debris can do. The over-arching mythology really began to get rolling with the fifth episode (where Influx was about to make half of Manhattan disappear), and kicked into high gear with the two-part time loop episodes. It's been great to see the stories go from mediocre to very gripping -- much as an 'origin story' does -- leaving us with an episode that is a real game changer for the series moving forward. Now we just have to hope that NBC will feel confident enough in the show to keep it going either on the network or on Peacock. They could even pair it with the excellent Resident Alien on Syfy. Come on, NBCUniversal, let's keep this show going!

UPDATE MAY 27, 2021 - NBC has cancelled Debris after one season.

NBC Announces 2021-2022 Schedule

Capitalizing on a year with huge audience drivers, including two Olympics and the Super Bowl, NBC heads into the 2021-22 season with a winning year-round programming strategy that highlights dominant dramas in the fall, doubles down on comedies in midseason and pairs powerhouse unscripted shows with big tentpole event programming.

“Our program strategy for NBC is singularly focused on driving growth by capturing audiences with can’t-miss event television and keeping them on the network with immersive scripted series,” said Frances Berwick, Chairman, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We are leaning into pieces of the legacy that work, but not being precious about experimenting with things that can benefit from a change.”

“NBC is the flagship network in our portfolio and we wanted to treat it as such, shining a light on some of our most beloved shows and introducing a broad range of dynamic new programming,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “Honoring our fans is a major focus this year and we’re delivering on favorites with more ‘Law & Order’ and ‘AGT’ as well as big send-offs for award-winning shows ‘This Is Us’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ We have all of our amazing returning shows, and we’re launching what I believe will be fan favorites of the future – strong dramas like ‘La Brea,’ ‘Ordinary Joe,’ and ‘The Thing About Pam,’ laugh-out-loud comedies ‘American Auto’ and Grand Crew,’ and big new unscripted shows such as ‘American Song Contest.’”

Three new dramas join the fall schedule, including “Ordinary Joe” – a heartfelt, uplifting series centered around the idea of how choices made in a single moment can alter the course of life forever; “La Brea,” which follows the aftermath of a massive sinkhole that opens in Los Angeles revealing a mysterious primeval land; and “Law & Order: For the Defense,” a new chapter of the beloved brand that puts lawyers under the microscope. With perennial hit “The Voice” returning for its 21st cycle, featuring first-time coach Ariana Grande, the two new dramas will use the music show’s enviable launch pad on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The success of Wednesday night’s One Chicago lineup -- #1 in total viewers three years running -- will pave the way for the “Law & Order” franchise to dominate on Thursday nights.

This new night of Dick Wolf dramas brings together the iconic, record-breaking 23rd season of “Law & Order: SVU” with newly minted hit “Law & Order: Organized Crime” and the premiere of “Law & Order: For the Defense,” providing the perfect playground for crossover events.

After kicking off with a special post-Olympics send-off for “Brooklyn Nine Nine” this summer, comedy returns to the schedule in midseason. New series “American Auto” and “Grand Crew” will join sophomore successes “Kenan,” “Mr. Mayor” and “Young Rock”for two big nights of funny. From “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer and starring Ana Gasteyer and Jon Barinholtz, “American Auto” builds on NBC’s legacy as the unrivaled home of the workplace comedy.  “Grand Crew” also builds on NBC catalogue, hailing from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor. Starring Echo Kellum (“Arrow”) and Nicole Byer (“Nailed It!”), “Grand Crew” revolves around a group of friends who unpack the ups and downs of life and love at a wine bar.

Midseason continues with new true-crime limited series “The Thing About Pam,” from Blumhouse Television, starring Renee Zellweger and inspired by episodes of “Dateline NBC,” where it became one of the most popular topics to ever air on the hit franchise. Other marquee midseason dramas include the sixth and final season of Dan Fogelman’s award-winning series “This Is Us,” which will return to its traditional Tuesday night 9 p.m. timeslot to give fans a largely uninterrupted run.

Throughout the year, NBC’s scripted series will be supercharged by huge promotional opportunities, including the Tokyo Summer Olympics, Beijing Winter Olympics and Super Bowl LVI as well as NBC’s hit holiday programming and four-quadrant unscripted series.

NBC’s holiday programming remains a top-audience driver, and this season’s robust lineup of live events and specials includes a return to the network’s storied tradition of live musicals with seven-time Tony Award winner “Annie Live!” In addition, Jimmy Fallon is set produce the animated special “Five More Sleeps ‘Til Christmas,” based on his best-selling children’s book, and a new animated special, “Trolls Holiday in Harmony,” arrives from DreamWorks Animation.

Hit comedies “Kenan,” “Mr. Mayor,” and “Young Rock” will also air special holiday episodes.  These special events join perennial favorites that include “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” and “Christmas at Rockefeller Center,” ensuring that audiences stay entertained and engaged all through the holiday season.

Unscripted series continue the family fun with all new shows and returning favorites that kick-off in January and will populate the schedule throughout midseason and summer. These include “AGT: Extreme,” the high-octane, stunt-filled spinoff of hit franchise “America’s Got Talent,” and for the first time, an adaptation of the biggest music competition in the world, Eurovision Song Contest, with “American Song Contest.” This all-live event series features original musical performances, representing all 50 states, five U.S. territories and our nation’s capital, competing to win the country's vote for the Best Original Song in a grand spectacle.

New game show “The Wheel,” based on a smash hit UK format, features contestants aiming to win big with the help of celebrity guests playing on a giant, spinning wheel. Jimmy Fallon heads to the primetime schedule as the executive producer and host of “That’s My Jam,” while Dick Wolf enters the unscripted space with the docuseries “LA Fire and Rescue,” following the real-life heroes of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The Emmy Award-winning celebrity genealogy docuseries “Who Do You Think You Are?” returns to NBC from executive producers Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky, while “Home Sweet Home” from Ava DuVernay will see two families embark on a life-changing experience, switching homes to see what life is really like behind closed doors.

NBC will finish the current season with the #1 most-watched alternative program “The Voice,” the #1 comedy with “Saturday Night Live” and the #1 drama with “This Is Us.” The network had two of the most successful comedies of the season in "Young Rock," which scored NBC’s best comedy debut in the 18-49 demo in nearly four years, and “Mr. Mayor,” which premiered as NBC’s best Thursday comedy launch in total viewers in nearly five years.

Returning shows for the 2021-22 schedule include “The Blacklist,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Dateline NBC,” “Kenan,” “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Mr. Mayor,” “NBC Sunday Night Football,” “New Amsterdam,” “This Is Us,” “The Voice,” “The Wall,” “Transplant,” “Weakest Link” and “Young Rock.”

Decisions are yet to be made on “Debris,” “Ellen’s Game of Games,” “Good Girls,” “Manifest,” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.”

As part of NBC’s rolling pilot process this year, the following projects have been picked up to pilot with decisions yet to be made on series greenlights: “Dangerous Moms” “Getaway,” “Hungry,” “Night Court” “Someone Out There” and the Untitled Nick Wootton/Jake Coburn Project. With the NBC’s 52-week scheduling strategy, these pilots could be possibilities for later in the 2021-22 season or could roll over to the 2022-23 season.
