STREAMING NEWS

★More familiar faces have been added to the Natasha Lyonne Peacock series Poker Face. Joining the previously announced extensive cast are Ron Perlman, Nick Nolte, Charles Melton (Riverdale) and Tim Blake Nelson.


★Shudder has inked a new deal with The Boulet Brothers to expand the Dragula franchise with a new season of the competition series, a spin-off series, and a special to air next year. The first project is a full-season spinoff series based on their reality competition series The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula that has already finished principal filming and will debut this fall. The series’ format, content and cast are still being kept under wraps.

MOVIE NEWS

★Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are going into production on a new Saw movie which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 27, 2023. Plot details are currently under wraps and no cast announcements have been made as of yet.


★Viola Davis will be joining the Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the head gamemaker of the 10th annual Hunger Games.

black-ish creator Kenya Barris will write and direct a modern day reimagining of The Wizard of Oz for Warner Brothers. Creative details about the project are being kept under wraps for now.

★Neal McDonough and Casey Cott will star in football drama Black Spartans, which explores the explosive era of the mid-1960s where social upheaval paved the way for a new order in college football. Jones’ first feature tells the story of the first fully integrated college football team, inspired by the Michigan State Spartans team, coached by Duffy Daugherty, which forever changed the face of the sport. Studio and release plans are not known at this time. Production will begin this Fall in Atlanta.

IN MEMORIAM

★Robyn Griggs, best known for her roles on soaps Another World and One Life To Live, died August 13 at the age of 49. Griggs had been battling cervical cancer. Griggs appeared on six episodes of One Life To Live in 1991, and then moved to Another World in 1993 for two years. Prior to her soap roles she appeared on the Nickelodeon program Rated K, which featured young people reviewing films. Her post soap credits include mostly low budget/indie films including Zombiegeddon, Severe Injuries, Dead Clowns, Final Curtain, 2020: An American Nightmare, The Absence of Light, Slashers Gone Wild!, Shadows in the Woods,October Moon 2: November Son, Demon Divas and the Lanes of Damnation, Hellweek and Joey Hollywood's Movie Night 2.

★Denise Dowse died August 13 at the age of 64. Dowse earlier in the week had been in a coma after contracting meningitis. Dowse had a long television career, making her debut in the 1989 series Almost There!. Other TV credits include ALF, Jake and the Fatman, Roc, Full House, California Dreams, Murphy Brown, Seinfeld, Touched by an Angel, Men Behaving Badly, Tracey Takes On, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Built to Last, Chicago Hope, NewsRadio, Step by Step, ER, Sister, Sister, Moesha, The West Wing, Becker, The Practice, The Drew Carey Show, Judging Amy, Without a Trace, Dragnet, Girlfriends, The Guardian, Everwood, Threshold, The Bernie Mac Show, Charmed, All of Us, Law & Order, Shark, Monk, House, Bones, Criminal Minds, Rizzoli & Isles, Secrets and Lies, Castle, Murder in the First, The X-Files, Imposters, Mr. Mercedes, 9-1-1, Good Trouble, New Amsterdam, The Resident, Grey's Anatomy, Stumptown, and Snowfall. Her best remembered roles were Vice Principal Yvonne Teasley on Beverly Hills 90210 and Dr. Rhonda Pine on Insecure.

Dowse will make her feature film directorial debut with Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story, which is currently in post-production. The film will star Ledisi, Keith David, Corbin Bleu, Vanessa Williams and Janet Hubert. Dowse made her film acting debut in 1990's Coldfire. Other credits include Sneakers, Out for Blood, Merchant of Evil, Bio-Dome, Theodore Rex, Starship Troopers, Pleasantville, A Civil Action, Requiem for a Dream, Dr. Doolittle 2, Killer Rats, The Seat Filler, Ray, Coach Carter, Guess Who, Reign Over Me, Fly Away, The Call, Please Stand By, A Stone Cold Christmas, Loners, Fatale, and A Cloud So High.
