HOTCHKA Daily News - August 4, 2022

STREAMING NEWS

Paramount+ will stream the feature length animated film Baby Shark's Big Movie, which will premiere during the 2023 holiday season.

Disney+ has renewed Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts for a second season. The first season won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Informative Talk Show.

Initial news Thursday said HBO Max and Discovery+ would remain separate entities, although programming from Magnolia Network, a hub on D+, would be moving to HBO Max in September. In the flip side, programming from CNN Originals, now on HBO Max, will be moving to D+. Later in the day it was revealed the two services will be combined into one next Summer in the US with other territories to follow. David Zaslav, head of WBD, has assured the industry that they will dramatically increase spending on HBO Max and HBO content, with the current execs at HBO and HBO Max locked in for several years (one of the few departments that didn't see executive turn-over in the wake of the merger). But what the one service will look like, or what it will be called, is up in the air at the moment. After the new combined service is established, WBD plans to role out a free, ad-supported service as well that will include some of the premium service's offerings.

Hulu will be adapting Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City as a limited dramatic series, which tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the Fair’s shadow. Keanu Reeves will star, his first major role in a US TV series. The series is expected to debut in 2024.

Annaleigh Ashford will co-star with Sarah Paulson in Hulu's horror thriller Dust.

Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy are joining the currently untitled Netflix romantic comedy that stars Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Joey King.

TV NEWS

Investigation Discovery has renewed In Pursuit with John Walsh for a fourth season, and added a special and a companion shot to the order. Season 4 will consist of 12 episodes and premiere on August 24. The premiere will be followed by the special In Pursuit: Hot On The Trail. The companion show In Pursuit with John Walsh: Captured will look back at the 37 captures the show has accomplished to date. It will air August 31.

Jaime Pressly will be joining the cast of Welcome to Flatch when it returns to FOX for a second season on Thursday, September 29 at 9:00 PM.

Nancy Travis and Tiera Skovbye have joined the cast of the new Hallmark Channel series Ride. The series follows Missy (Skovbye), a former rodeo queen who is a McMurray by marriage and struggles to find her place in the family. Travis is Isabel McMurray, the tough-as-nails family matriarch fighting to keep her family legacy afloat following a tragedy. Also new to the cast are Beau Mirchoff, Sara Garcia and Jake Foy.

BET will launch a new dating series, After Happily Ever After, which will be hosted by Bow Wow. The unscripted show will ask exes from a divorce or separation to play matchmaker for their former partners to help them move on and find love once again.

Starz will expand the Outlander universe with the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which will portray the love story between Jamie Fraser’s parents.

MOVIE NEWS

David Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that they have seen and are very happy with the Shazam! sequel, Black Adam and The Flash. There have been questions though, in the wake of the Batgirl drama, that the current releases may be shifted but those have not yet been addressed. Zaslav has brought in former Disney chief Alan Horn to help oversee a ten year plan for the DC filmic universe, saying the focus is on quality films and making DC better as a brand. The main focus will be on sole theatrical releases, though some films will have shorter windows before they head to streaming. Fans now are focused on the Blue Beetle film, originally developed for HBO Max and bumped to theatrical, hoping it won't befall the same fate as Batgirl. The are unconfirmed reports that the Supergirl movie which was to be spun off from The Flash is in imminent danger even though it is currently in development. Keep watching this space.
