STREAMING NEWS

★HBO Max has renewed Max Original drama series Tokyo Vice for a second season.


★Upcoming Apple TV Plus comedy series Mrs. American Pie has been making waves with its previous cast announcements including stars Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Allison Janney and Leslie Bibb. Add one more name to the list -- Carol Burnett, who will appear as Norma, the grande dame of Palm Beach high society, a keeper of secrets with more than a few of her own.


★Rian Johnson scored a big name for his 10-episode Peacock mystery drama series in star Natasha Lyonne. Now ChloĆ« Sevigny is set to co-star with her friend of 25 years. Sevigny recently joined Lyonne on the second season of Russian Doll.

TV NEWS

★UK's ITV network is planning to take on BBC Three's popular RuPaul's Drag Race UK with its own drag competition, the one-off 90-minute Queens of the Night hosted by Lorraine Kelly, with judges Mel C, Rob Beckett and drag superstar (and former Drag Race contestant) Courtney Act. The competitors for this celebrity special will include UK daytime TV icon Mr. Motivator and Love Island's Chris Hughes, who will be mentored by Drag Race UK favorites Blu Hydrangea and Kitty Scott-Claus.

★Spectrum has cancelled its original drama Long Slow Exhale after one season. The series starred Rose Rollins and Josh Lucas.


★Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of Chrisley Knows Best, have been convicted on multiple counts of bank fraud and tax evasion by a federal jury, and Julie was charged with wire fraud and obstruction of justice. The couple are alleged to have defrauded local banks out of at least $30 million in loans. Sentencing is set for October 6 and they face up to 30 years in prison. USA Network, which just renewed the series for a tenth season, had no comment.


★ABC has revealed there will be two female leads on the 19th season of The Bachelorette, Gabby Windey and Rachel Recchia, with 32 men vying for their hearts. Both women were dumped on the last season of The Bachelor by Clayton Echard.

★Elizabeth Vargas will host a new daily syndicated true crime series, iCrime with Elizabeth Vargas, beginning September 12. The program is cleared to air in more than 95% of the country. Check your local listings for channel and time.

MOVIE NEWS

★Jason Bateman has exited his role as director of the upcoming Scarlett Johansson/Chris Evans feature film Artemis due to creative differences with production company These Pictures. The parting is said to be amicable with both parties still interested in pursuing another project on which to collaborate. Apple had previously acquired the project in a $100 million-plus deal.


★Julia Garner, best known for her roles on Ozark and Inventing Anna, is the top choice to play Madonna in a biopic from Universal Pictures. Madonna will direct from a script by Diablo COdy.

STAGE NEWS


★In addition to the earlier announcement of the closing of Dear Evan Hansen after six years, Broadway's Tina -- The Tina Turner Musical will end its run on Sunday, August 14. The show opened November 7, 2019 and will have played 27 previews and 482 regular performances. The show was nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical, with Adrienne Warren winning for the title role. A 30-city national tour will launch on September 14 in Providence, Rhode Island.


★New stage production Sesame Street: The Musical, featuring Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, Grover, Rosita, Bert, Ernie and Oscar the Grouch and new members created for the production, will open Off Broadway this Fall. Previews will begin September 8 at Theater Row with opening night set for September 22. The show is scheduled to run through November 27.

 

 

 

IN MEMORIAM

★Jim Seals, one half of the soft rock duo Seals & Crofts, has died at the age of 80. The due had hits with 'Summer Breeze', 'Diamond Girl', 'Get Closer', 'We May Never Pass This Way Again', 'I'll Play For You', 'Goodbye Old Buddies' and 'You're the Love'.
